A bright re-make of the old 18th-century historical romp, with the Wright stuff. As Daniel Defoe's heroine, Robin Wright is surprisingly feisty and appealing in a totally re-written, splendidly romantic story. In a particularly good-looking and atmospheric production, Morgan Freeman enlivens all his scenes in a successful go at being an unexpected but jolly partner for the heroine. A rollicking movie that's so much more than the usual tired plod through a classic book.
