Ron Howard's satirical look at a life lived on TV followed hard on the heels of The Truman Show, but for likeability (if not plausibility), this has the edge. Texas video-store clerk Ed (Matthew McConaughey) is, at 31, plucked from obscurity to have his life put on TV, a spot much coveted by his musclebound brother Ray (Woody Harrelson). Ed becomes a celebrity, nicks Ray's girl (Jenna Elfman) and finds a glamorous model (Elizabeth Hurley) is willing to make love to him on TV for fleeting fame. Elfman proves that being very tall is no bar to being cute and funny as well, but all the best lines go to Martin Landau as Ed's wheelchaired stepfather. 'I gotta pee,' he tells Ed. 'Wish me luck.'
