As 18th century comedies of manners go, this is quite good fun. It's no Tom Jones and that's for sure, but veterans Nigel Hawthorne and Joan Collins still afford considerable amusement in a tale of impoverished nobility being forced to marry into a nouveau riche family. The noble scion (Tom Hollander) is betrothed to Betsy (Emma Chambers) but falls heavily for her sister (Natasha Little) who has unfortunately got herself pregnant by the clerk (Paul Nicholls) of her father (Timothy Spall) and undergone the eponymous marriage. With Collins devouring the dialogue as the rod-of-iron aunt who rules over Spall's family, the scene is set for an abundance of misunderstandings, some well-earned chuckles and a slice of tedium no doubt inherited from the original play.
