A remake of Warren Beatty's Heaven Can Wait, this film hands centre stage to Chris Rock, an Eddie Murphy wannabe with glimmers of Eddie's charm and charisma.
It tells the story of unsuccessful comedian Lance Barton (Rock), who has great plans for the rest of his life. Unfortunately and unexpectedly these plans are thwarted when Barton is killed in a bus accident.
Well, not quite killed. He is plucked from the accident scene before it even happens by one of God's useless staff whose timing is a little off. Once the mistake is discovered, one of the angels promises to get Barton back on Earth but the only way he can do it is by sending him down as someone else.
So, Barton is reincarnated as a wealthy tycoon, Charles Wellington (Gandolfini). Unfortunately, Wellington's wife and assistant are plotting to have him killed - so the pearly gates may not be so far off after all...
Chris Rock is the master of funny, unpredictable, light-hearted comedy and he pulls it off brilliantly in this film. Although not quite believable in some parts, this movie could be a breakthrough for Rock's career - he proves he's more than just a bit-part Saturday Night Live player.
There are not many comedies around with original jokes - so for that alone, it's worth watching! Down To Earth is a crowd pleaser for all the right reasons.
