The former model - best known for the role of teenager Clark Kent in TV's Smallville - made his big screen debut in the comedy Cheaper By The Dozen.
He went on to star in the remake of John Carpenter's 1979 horror thriller The Fog.
The son of a former executive with General Motors, he has two older sisters and a younger brother.
After graduating in 1995 from Okemos High School in Michigan (where he starred in Some Like It Hot), Welling opted out of college and made ends meet as a construction worker.
After working as a model alongside Ashton Kutcher, he had his big break in 1999 when he appeared in six episodes of the TV romance Judging Amy.
In 2003, he made his big screen debut as Charlie Baker opposite Steve Martin and Bonnie Hunt in Cheaper By The Dozen.
After the 2005 sequel Cheaper By The Dozen 2, he starred as charter skipper Nick Castle in The Fog.
He also landed the role of Clark Kent in the American TV series Smallville (after turning it down twice).
