A harsh, amoral gangster yarn, adapted from Norman Mailer's novel 'An American Dream'. The theme and its treatment are reminiscent of Hollywood thrillers of the 1940s, with Whitman as an anti-gangster television crusader who falls into the clutches of the underworld through the death of his wife. In a small part as a maid, who, clad only in towel and shower-water, tries to seduce the hero, Susan Denberg, an Austrian miss with sulky stare, flaxen tresses and eyes like opaque green marble, quite walks away with the film.
