The story bursts into action without so much as a single credit appearing on the screen in this revenge thriller. Commonplace, nowadays. But when director Fred Zinnemann pulled the stunt in an effort to hold the audience's interest from start to finish, it was regarded as something of an innovation - and a welcome one at that. Originally, Gregory Peck and Humphrey Bogart were set to play the roles finally grittily filled by Van Heflin and Robert Ryan.
