Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's lavish, colourful version of the first part of Galsworthy's Forsyte odyssey, concentrating on the fortunes of Irene. This is not surprising, as Greer Garson, who plays her, was one of the studio's biggest stars of the time. Errol Flynn and Robert Young are less comfortably cast, but the story still exercises its old grip.
