Italy's film-making Taviani Brothers go west in this bizarre epic which is itself about two brothers who (in the film's most charming sequence) travel to America, where they eventually find fame and fortune working on D W Griffith's film epic Intolerance as set designers. The Tavianis' version of Hollywood is an 'impression' that will raise a few protests from lovers of historical accuracy, but they neglect to obtain forceful performances from their strong cast, which includes Vincent Spano, Joaquim de Almeida, Charles Dance (as a smug Griffith), Greta Scacchi and Desiree Becker. A pity, as the film is beguilingly `innocent' in feel, and has a few interesting plot surprises up its sleeve.
