A good attempt to tell the Biblical story of David, with Richard Gere handsome and athletic in the title role. But director Bruce Beresford, best known for the Barry McKenzie comedy films and Breaker Morant, tries to cram too much of a colourful life into a film lasting less than two hours which leads to some confusion if you haven't read the book! Edward Woodward comes out best of all as King Saul and the film also features Denis Quilley, Hurd Hatfield and Cherie Lunghi, who later managed a league football team in C4's The Manageress. She plays David's first wife in what could be termed a Second Division epic.
