This 'pop' version of Gilbert and Sullivan was an absolute smash on stage and director Wilford Leach obviously sees no reason to tamper with a winning format. Kevin Kline prances vigorously as the Pirate King, while Linda Ronstadt has an interesting voice if no future as an actress. The versatile Angela Lansbury is fun as the ship's drudge who turns into a pirate queen. It's stagebound but colourful.

This is the best pirate musical ever made and it's been my favourite film since I was about 10 years old! (I'm now 20) It should definitely be shown more often! The acting singing and the musical score is just fantastic! Definatley a must see which deserves 5 stars! I recommend it to everyone who enjoys comedy, musicals and Kevin Kline!
