For the most part darkly photographed and slow-moving, this New Orleans-set cop thriller does have a tremendous shoot-out climax, to which the whole film seems geared from the start. Richard Gere stars as a tough Chicago cop who takes a trip to New Orleans on a mission of vengeance against the man who murdered Gere's partner. And the only witness to the crime happens to be local gangster Jeroen Krabbé's slave-cum-mistress Kim Basinger. Gere and Basinger do their best with the material, but there's little chemistry between them, and the film just disappoints. .
