In this moody thriller, janitor William Hurt wades into trouble after a businessman is found murdered in his building. He is besotted by glamorous television reporter Sigourney Weaver, so when she talks to him about the crime, Hurt pretends that he harbours crucial information. A romance develops between them, but Hurt also attracts less welcome attention from various heavies, including villainous Christopher Plummer. Writer Steve Tesich once worked as a janitor; even so, his screenplay lacks credibility. Certainly, the class differences between Hurt and Weaver seem to take second place to the wilder thriller elements. However, the film has strong compensations, notably Peter Yates' taut direction and great performances from a top-notch cast, including James Woods and Morgan Freeman.
