Pavilion of Women

Period romance based on the novel by Pearl S Buck. In 1938, on the eve of the Japanese invasion of Manchuria, an American priest falls in love with the wife of a Chinese nobleman. Partly subtitled. Stars Willem Dafoe and Luo Yan.

Fans of unspoken-passion dramas with sweeping scores and sumptuous period costumes should find something to enjoy in this romance, set in 1938 China.

Willem Dafoe plays a missionary who falls for a wealthy local woman (Luo Yan), but her husband, her husband's concubine and their son are just a few of the obstacles in the path of love.

It's melodramatic and mannered in parts, but moving in others.

Based on Pearl S Buck's 1946 best-seller, it's the first US/Chinese co-production on record.
