This has C-movie written all over it - and that's sad for pumped-up star Christian Slater who, although uncharismatic here, is still the best thing in this lacklustre horror film based on a video game. He's Edward Carnby, a paranormal detective investigating a mystery that will be completely befuddling to audiences despite many minutes of scrolling text at the beginning that attempts to explain things. Eventually, we gather that evil supernatural monsters from an ancient civilisation are threatening to enter our world. Slater's co-star heroes are Stephen Dorff, as a creature-hunting government agent, and a bespectacled (that means she's clever) Tara Reid, as the obligatory mad scientist's unwitting assistant. OK, the monsters are passable, but there's precious little atmosphere.
