John Malkovich isn't entirely well cast or comfortable as a film director whose reflections link four stories about brief encounters between couples. But it's good to have one more film from veteran Italian film maker Michelangelo Antonioni, then aged 83, with some help from German director Wim Wenders, and there are several bright touches in an intriguing, well-crafted, worthwhile venture, even if it's main appeal is for foreign film buffs. The dreamy pace, odd atmosphere and elusive nature of the characters and their stories all combine to help recall Antonioni's Sixties heyday.
