A bright-looking misfire on the now-familiar theme of the android who develops human feelings. It's quite difficult to say why Susan Seidelman's film doesn't quite work, except for the fact that its leading performers do lack individuality. Ann Magnuson, for example, is nothing special and never quite hits the mark as the high-powered, highly sexed hype consultant hired to humanise a new space mission android, Ulysses (John Malkovich) for the benefit of the media. She looks like a supporting actress just slightly out of her depth. Malkovich also plays the robot's alter-ego scientist, who shows rather less in the way of emotions (surprisingly) than his creation. The fun and games that result from this situation are rather limited and not too inspiring or involving. Okay for TV and video, though, where attention is less demanding; and Glenne Headly is good as the heroine's dizzy friend.
