Richard Gere goes back to the farm for the first time since 'Days of Heaven' for this think-piece about two brothers on the run, having burned down the farm whose fortunes have crumbled since they took it over from their father. In true American 'country' tradition, many people treat the brothers as outlaw heroes and the notoriety of it all turns Gere's embittered mind to heady hysteria. From hopping across country in stolen cars, Gere begins to divert his thoughts to robbing banks. The film reaches for the pain and bitter irony of the situation but just misses them, and, no thanks to insipid performances, the leading characters never really spring to life. The pace in some scenes is too leisurely and the story doesn't step from incident to incident with quite the right momentum. The colour photography of Elliot Davis, though, makes the most of country settings in evening sunshine.
