James Coburn gives a stalwart performance as a US army lawyer defending a mentally ill American GI on trial for his life after strangling three local women in an involving fact-based drama that unfolded in Melbourne in 1942. Coburn finds that unusual wartime political expediences seem to be geting in the way of real justice. A downbeat but compelling and intelligent film that recalls Breaker Morant without quite being in the same league.
