This must have seemed like a wonderful idea, as its science-fiction plot mixes elements of Star Wars and the Mad Max films into a junior-league fantasy chase film - and the cast they assembled is terrific. But something went wrong along the way - the production design looks cheap, the writers use then-current teen-speak instead of creating something more intelligent, the villains are laughable instead of menacing, and only the gloomy setting of Tiretown shows the kind of flair needed to make the film work. Teenage leads Jason Patric and Jami Gertz were reunited to rather better effect on The Lost Boys. Futuristic violence makes this unsuitable for younger children.
