Robert De Niro plays a film director whose attendance at a couple of communist meetings in the late Thirties jeopardises his career 12 years later when he's blacklisted from working at even the smallest studio. The story is slight but the performances make it watchable throughout: De Niro is strong and Annette Bening is admirable as the ex-wife he has to turn to. Above all, the film's heart is in the right place.
