Fencing films have not exactly been plentiful and this one shows you why. Errol Flyn may have thrilled us to the core as Robin Hood but there's little excitement to be had in the training of fencers for Olympic glory. And a dire script is no help. 'How', asks one female student of another, 'do you seriously expect to find a man where guys play with long, pointy objects? ' And, having had his advances rejected, a male fencer complains 'I was just being myself' to which the girl comes back with the devastating riposte 'Why don't you try being someone else for a change? ' Touché! F Murray Abraham is the old janitor who's an ace from years gone by, but seems to do little cleaning apart from ineffectually flicking a feather duster. Eric Roberts is ludicrous as the 'salle' maestro haunted by the achievements of his dead father. It's unlikely that you'll be as haunted by this film.
