It's odd that it's taken so long for Ed McBain's 87th Precinct crime novels to hit the screen, but here at last is one. Based on the book Lightning, it has detectives Carella and Kling (Randy Quaid and Alex McArthur) on the trail of a serial killer who chooses female athletes as his victims. Well-paced with some sharp dialogue, this telefilm keeps much of the spirit of the books, even if Quaid isn't physically the darkly handsome Italian-American anyone familiar with the books would assume Carella to be. Still, a minor quibble, because this is something of a treat for anyone who has long been a fan of McBain's tersely written, well-plotted novels.
