The actor got his early break when he won the lead role after an open audition for Spike Lee's Clockers.
Subsequent career highlights include Shaft, I Still Know What You Did Last Summer and 8 Mile.
After Clockers, Phifer landed roles in the low-profile movies Hav Plenty, Soul Food and Hell's Kitchen before being cast as Tyrell in I Still Know What You Did Last Summer.
He went on to star alongside Samuel L Jackson in Shaft, O, the adaptation of Shakespeare's Othello and the sci-fi thriller The Imposter.
Phifer starred in The Older Brother and raised his profile in Eminem's big screen debut 8 Mile.
In 2002, he took the TV role of Dr Greg Pratt in ER and appeared in the feelgood dance movie Honey with Jessica Alba.
Recent work inlcludes Zak Snyder's remake of Dawn of the Dead.
