Star Kevin Kline could be excused for thinking director Lawrence Kasdan owed him a hit after so many mediocre movies together, but this isn't it. Originally called Paris Match - a more stylish title that reflects very much what's gone wrong with the film, it's all effect and no style. The two-dimensional characters (it would be nice to warm to these people, but the script ensures we never do) are headed by Meg Ryan, taking cuteness one layer too far as the girl whose pursuit of an errant fiancé (Timothy Hutton) leads to her unwitting involvement in diamond smuggling. The smuggler is Kline, trying out a number of continental accents, but never quite settling on one. He and Ryan keep striking 'loveable' poses, but actually succeed in avoiding loveability altogether. This fiercely arch screwball comedy could do with a few genuine nuts as well, to prevent it flying apart.
