Something to blow your mind here all right, which is what happens to several of the characters in this noisy, nasty, violent but very watchable cross of science-fantasy and whodunit, set in LA at the turn of the millennium. Lenny Nero (Ralph Fiennes), an ex-cop, is a grubby hustler selling digital tapes of real-life sex and violence which the buyers play on head-sets that make them the participant. 'I'm your main connection to the switchboard of your soul,' he tells prospective punters. He has an ex (Juliette Lewis), who is now the mistress of a promotions mogul, and another (Angela Bassett), who's a tough security driver for important clients. When the mogul's own top client, a black militant leader, has his brains blown out and a girl on the run (Brigitte Bako) throws a tape into Lenny's soon-towed-away car, the worlds of these people collide with nation-impacting violence. Though its brutality is sometimes hard to bear, the film works well enough, both as an action thriller and a chilling portrait of a nightmare near-future.
