Perceptive, well-acted but slightly dull telescoping of James Baldwin's epic novel of black American life from the mid Thirties on. Paul Winfield is the Southerner who heads north for a new life, but ends up as a Bible-thumping bigot oppressing the more sensitive of his two sons. More eye-catching performances come from a young Alfre Woodard and from Ving Rhames (unrecognisable as the bald character star of today) as the Winfield character when young, seduced by Woodard's sultry siren.
