The former competitive swimmer gave his breakthrough performance as cynical film student Mickey in horror sequel Scream 2.

A stage actor of note, with acclaimed performances in Off-Broadway productions such as The Monogamist, he had only been known for small roles.

Early credits included The First Wives' Club and A Life Less Ordinary until he attracted attention as the alluring drug dealer Todd Gaines in Go.

Olyphant went on to star as a bisexual actor in the independent feature Advice From a Caterpillar and made his TV debut in Mr & Mrs Smith.

He guest-starred on Sex and the City and offered support in WWII-set serial When Trumpets Fade.

Roles followed in Gone In Sixty Seconds, Rock Star and Coastlines. Olyphant recently turned up as sleazy Hollywood Jack in A Man Apart and also stars in horror-thriller Dreamcatcher.
