A big-budget horror movie with all the tired old trappings of the genre. The monster, supposedly a combination of man-eating man, galloping gecko and rampaging rhino, looks like that angry old alien to us, complete with slobbery tombstone teeth and a craving for those parts of the human brain it needs to stay healthy. Unwary explorers in the Brazilian rainforest only have to drink certain jungle juices to be consumed with a need for those leaves and berries that turn them into a decapitating monster that wreaks havoc in Dr Penelope Ann Miller's museum. Never fear, Dr Penny, changing into a little black number for the opening of her superstition exhibition, is sure to find a way to put paid to this megagodzilla before half of Chicago is scrunched in its jaws. As usual, people creep around in the dark and get gobbled up, but director Peter Hyams can be relied upon to keep the old formula brisk enough to ensure we clutch our partner even as we chuckle.
