Shocking, grim, but powerfully told (and performed) true story about a US governmental experiment on the effects of syphilis, which was conducted on African-American men from 1932 to 1972. Events are recalled, via flashback during the 1971 Congressional hearings, from the viewpoint of Nurse Eunice Evers (Alfre Woodard), who devoted her life to caring for the men who were allowed to die despite there being a cure available. The ever-excellent Laurence Fishburne co-stars as Caleb Humphries, one of the 'guinea pigs', who engaged in a failed love affair with Nurse Evers, and was cured of the disease when he joined the army during World War Two.
