The year is 2065, and Dr Aki Ross (voiced by Ming Na from ER) is a beautiful, brilliant scientist.

She's also Earth's last hope for defeating the aliens which roam the planet decimating field and city, threatening to extinguish life itself.

With the guidance of her scientific mentor, Dr Sid (voiced by Donald Sutherland) and the Deep Eyes military squadron - led by the courageous Capt Gray Edwards (voiced by Alec Baldwin) - Aki races to save both the planet and herself.

Infected by an alien spirit, Aki holds the key to discovering the secret to defeating the creatures.

But her quest is challenged by the militant opposition of General Hein (voiced by James Woods).

He plots to unleash deadly military weapons that could not only destroy the enemy, but the Earth as well.

Aki searches her nightly dreams to find the answer to the alien mystery. She scours the earth to collect the eight spirits she believes will save the planet.

Fighting both the enemy within and the scheming General Hein, who would destroy the earth in order to save it, Aki valiantly pursues her Final Fantasy.

Featuring state-of-the-art, computer-generated and photo-realistic human beings, Final Fantasy is a visual masterpiece. Outstanding computer animation combined with a bleak vision of the future, creates a tremendously exciting sci-fi tale.

The innovative story turns the computer game into an experience that passive non-gamers can enjoy. The hand-held interactive version has numerous cinematic sequences which have been expanded to create this feature length summer movie.

There is, of course, a love story thrown into the mix between Aki and Captain Gray, which is disappointing although fits with the occasional cliches of dialogue.

A lot of flash animation and not much story-telling, this film is principally for light viewing, a level on which it definitely works.
