Superman falls temporarily from grace in this inventive third film in the high-flying series. Poisoned by synthetic Kryptonite containing nicotine tar, he blows out the Olympic torch, straightens up the Tower of Pisa and pollutes the oceans with oil, just for starters. Christopher Reeve gives the whole thing a human element some actors wouldn't manage, and excels in the battle between good and bad Supermen. The start is riotously good, the main plotline rather less so, with Richard Pryor not at his best as a crooked computer genius. Special effects are well up to the mark, though, especially when Superman uses a frozen lake to put out a raging fire.
