The fun of The Three Musketeers is overturned to reveal the darker, more serious side of the coin in this sequel. But the action is still all dazzling stuff, from an epic sword battle in a nunnery to an eye-stunning duel on ice. Faye Dunaway (as the evil Milady) and Oliver Reed (as Athos, playing a more prominent part in the plot this time around) are both in dominant form, while Michael York is again D'Artagnan. The sweeping last 15 minutes and the triumphant ending almost make you forget that this is decidedly a notch below the previous film in sheer joie de vivre.
