One of those fascinating plots about a strange incident glimpsed on film, Stephen Poliakoff's stylish journey into the unknown is more successful as an excavation of aspects of London that lie just beneath the surface than as a kind of sideshoot of Blow-Up. The storyline is enriched by such atmosphere locations as canal shelters, lengthy troop shelters and abandoned underground tramsheds - settings worthy of science-fiction. Charles Dance is a charismatic lead; the attractive Cassie Stuart seems less at ease as the impetuous foil to his cynicism.
