One of the big money-spinners of its year, to the bafflement of many critics, this is a tolerable novelty romp if you care for cute comedies about babies. John Travolta's career certainly needed a break at this stage, but this was a mighty lucky one. An embarrassing beginning, giving an impression of a gang of sperms fertilising a human egg, is followed by a most unconvincing pregnancy in which unwed mum Kirstie Alley looks as though she is wearing a toilet seat under her dress. The tale is made partially palatable by the performance of the beautifully flat-faced Alley and by using the voice of Bruce Willis to give us the thoughts of the baby. Travolta is more or less along for the ride as the taxi-driver the baby wants to be his father, and George Segal and Olympia Dukakis don't make much impression in supporting roles. You'll enjoy some of it, though - also the continuity slip where our hero is 'driving' his cab, which is clearly being steered by a stuntman wearing dark glasses, while Travolta isn't wearing glasses at all!
