In an age when it has become commonplace for singers to make the transition to acting in films - Kris Kristofferson, Johnny Cash, David Bowie and Sting have all had varying success - the casting of Country `n' Western star Barbara Mandrell as a geologist attempting to drown a series of mine fires must go down as the most bizarre. The singer previously guested as herself in Magnum star Tom Selleck's 1979 TV movie Concrete Cowboys, but is more pressurised here when called upon to carry the whole show. Director Gil (Gilbert) Cates hit his stride later the same year with the more substantial and rewarding Emmy-nominated Consenting Adult.
