An outstanding drama from John Korty, the talented director of Go Ask Alice, The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman and The Ewok Adventure. Michael Learned's warm performance as the recently-divorced Nebraskan teacher struggling to make ends meet in San Francisco provides a solid foundation for the episodic vignettes involving members of a church choir. As the choir master, John Houseman gives a typically stern portrait of dignified old age and makes the most memorable scene - a dissertation on the true meaning of `amateur' - an exhilarating and moving moment. A rare film in that it manages to convey the community spirit at work in the church and although its dramas are low-key they are enacted con brio by the entire cast.
