The original title of this Italian/North American co-production was 'The End of the World in Our Usual Bed in a Night Full of Rain', a rarely seen political love story from German director Lina Wertmuller in her English language debut. Candice Bergen, in a powerfully impressive performance, plays Lizzy, a photojournalist who meets Paolo (Giancarlo Giannini), a sleazy Italian communist, while on an assignment in Rome. He rescues her from a brawl and, as she recuperates, attempts to seduce her, but when they meet again in San Francisco romance blossoms. Once married, the sparks continue to fly as he insists she stays at home cooking and washing. The rest of the film follows the development of their relationship and offers an interesting insight into Seventies attitudes as Lizzy, an emerging feminist, fights to become actively involved in Paolo's socialist activities. Not brilliant or one of the wayward Wertmuller's best, but still a moderately interesting curio.
