Ladder 49

Rookie Jack Morrison (Joaquin Phoenix) rises up the rungs of Ladder 49 in this heartfelt tribute to America's fire-fighting heroes. Locating the action in Baltimore rather than New York avoids cheap comparisons with the World Trade Center attack and stresses the bloke-next-door quality of the everyman heroes.

This is a film about a selfless man who finds his life is dominated by his love of firefighting. But as he grows up, he sees the pain of fire and the strain his choices place on his family. This is a wonderful film, and more believable than an action movie. I truly felt for those people who do save others on a daily basis.
