Y Tu Oscars Tambien
Road movies do not come any hotter or sexier, writes Lucy CriddleThe lives of Mexican teenagers Julio (Gael García Bernal, Amores Perros) and Tenoch (Diego Luna), like those of 17-year old boys everywhere, are ruled by raging hormones, intense friendships, and a headlong rush into adulthood.
Over the course of a summer, the two best friends are living out a carefree cross-country adventure with a beautiful, older woman in a sexual and emotional odyssey of self-discovery.
Just days after the boys trade heartfelt good-byes with their sexy, young girlfriends - who are headed to Europe for summer vacation - their attention is diverted by Luisa (Maribel Verdú), a gorgeous 28-year-old Spaniard who they meet at a cousin's wedding in Mexico city.
A few days later, Luisa receives some news and, needing a change of scenery, tracks the boys down to accepts their offer to leave Mexico City and embark on an enlightening road trip.
The unlikely trio hit the road, their destination not so much to Boca del Cielo (Heaven's Mouth) as that seductive and secluded place where innocence, sexuality, and friendships clash.
Julio and Tenoch are forced to reveal to each other sides of their characters they had never before even dared explore.
Luisa is the catalyst of self-discovery. Her presence brings out the best - and the worst - in the two friends.
It is easy to see why this hot-blooded road movie was a box office record-breaker in its native Mexico and nominated for a plethora of awards including an Oscar and a Bafta.
