Today's black romantic comedy-crime-thriller: that is to say, laced with extreme violence and language, with most of the dialogue pitched at top-decibel level. The action starts in the sticks, with a black-white shootout that ends with sweet trick Robin Givens hotfooting it out of a charnel-house full of bodies clutching a suitcase full of crude gold. Once in town, she latches on to plump, religious, virginal Forest Whitaker as a prospective meal-ticket, falls in love with him and involves him with various literally cutthroat factions out to get the gold. Whitaker is quite sympathetic, and Givens seductive enough to kill for all right, but Danny Glover has the only really interesting role in this fevered farrago as a perfumed gangster who trusts only his beloved Pomeranian dog.
