A slow and steamy modern version of a film noir - and, despite its too-long running time, quite an effective one at that. Don Johnson is Harry, who drifts into a small Texas town ostensibly looking for work, gets it as a car salesman and promptly becomes involved with two gorgeous women, his boss's predatory wife and the demure 19-year-old receptionist at the showroom. Wifey soon has him wrapped in her web, but he finds himself attracted to the younger girl, despite the fact that she seems to have a dark past. Even when the wife horrifies Harry by suggesting something might happen to aggravate her hubby's weak heart, we can see that things might have worked out well for Harry. But there's one thing we haven't told you: Harry is a travelling bank robber. And this is about to complicate his life no end. Johnson's surly charisma is just right for this role, while both Virginia Madsen and Jennifer Connelly, in different ways, ooze sexual come-hither. The atmosphere created is so tangibly fascinating, that you hardly realise the story doesn't have much action (apart from the sexual kind). Nice ending, too: apt but not too downbeat. A winner, but only on points.
