She is a sculptor and he is a banker, but Sam finds it hard to express himself emotionally.
One evening, after the theatre, Sam is gunned down by a mugger who struggles to get the pair to hand over their wallets.
Following Sam's death, Molly's emotional state completely declines into a severe depression, but unknown to her, Sam is still around.
He has come back as a ghost in order to protect Molly from danger.
The problem is that Sam cannot communicate with Molly unless he channels his messages through a psychic - Oda Mae Brown (Goldberg - who won an Oscar for this role) who is at first unwilling to help but soon realises that she can save Molly's life.
Directed by Jerry Zucker, Ghost depicts the love between the living and the dead in an effective and real manner.
The sense of mutual loss will break the heart of the most hardened viewer, and the special effects depicting of spirits rampaging through the subway are dated but still effective.
This is an inspiring story which is played well and scripted by some clever and witty writers.
Not a terrifying ghost story but a moving love story with some thrilling dark undertones.
