The writer and director first attracted attention with the 1996 comedy drama Buenos Aires Vice Versa.
He made his debut with the short El Zoologico y el cementerio in 1978 and subsequent films have included 1988's award-winning Boda Secreta.
The same year he wrote and directed Love Is A Fat Woman, which won the special jury prize at the Dutch Film Festival.
Subsequent films included 1990's City Life and Modern Crimes, for which he was nominated for best film at the International Fantasy Film Festival.
Other notable movies include Wind With The Gone, A Night With Sabrina and La Cruz, which told the story of a sacked film critic.
Recent work includes Valentin, a semi-autobiographical story of an eight-year-old boy in search of his absentee mother.
