A polished, adult performance here by Drew Barrymore as the poisonous Ivy - a sleazy, sexy teenager who wheedles her destructive way into the lives of lonely Sylvie (Roseanne's Sara Gilbert), Sylvie's ailing mother (an uneasily cast Cheryl Ladd) and her rich alcoholic father (Tom Skerritt) - will be the main reason for watching this rather nasty thriller. Gilbert does well in her Bohemian misfit role, in a sometimes gripping tale of obsession, manipulation and murder, which would work better if its characters were more clearly fleshed out - and without the sledgehammer direction of Katt Shea Ruben. Barrymore's quite a number in this one, though; and near the beginning look out for Leonardo DiCaprio in one of his earliest roles.
