Quiet and sweet-natured, but penetrating in its view of the human character, this is a minor gem. Fate deals most of its characters unexpected blows, but they remain fascinating, vulnerable and likeable - in contrast to some gangsters who make a brief appearance, but fail to disturb the tranquility of the neighbourhood for long. The stories revolve around Auggie (Harvey Keitel) who runs a small Brooklyn cigar store. He lends comfort and help to friends - things he needs himself when his ex-lover (Stockard Channing) returns to tell him their daughter has become a drug addict. A low-key drama about roots, friendship and the inevitablity of change, it's a real slice of life.
