This far-fetched mid-Nineties comedy drama is based on a script of the same title that was originally intended to be shot in the late 1970s starring Peter Falk. 20 years after being abandoned, it was reworked, resulting in this lacklustre Albert Brooks vehicle. Cynical baseball scout Brooks is sent to recruit new talent in Mexico as a punishment for having brought his team a poor crop of players. Once there he discovers an overwhelmingly talented youngster (Brendan Fraser) who can pitch at 100mph and hit better than anyone back home in the USA, and immediately brings him back and signs him. Unfortunately the rookie turns out to have serious psychological problems, sending Brooks searching for a psychiatrist while babysitting his unstable and potentially dangerous charge. The film starts off promisingly, but it soon becomes apparent that Brooks's mixture of comic antics and psychological delvings has missed the mark. And baseball fans will be disappointed, as the sport hardly figures in this dull movie.
