The times, they were a-changin' in Fifties Baltimore and this fourth trip down memory lane from writer-director Barry Levinson (following Diner, Tin Men and Avalon) offers another beautifully observed slice of life. It's a gentle coming-of-age saga centred on two teenage Jewish boys as they find romance with not only non-Jews but non-whites. But even with a sub-story about Dad (the under-used Joe Mantegna) and an illegal numbers racket it's a small film, and not even its vast warmth and nostalgia can sustain a two-hour running time.
