After being identified and harassed by an elusive serial killer (Reeves), Joel Campbell (Spader), a detective, is close to cracking up.
He's been tracking the killer, David Allen Griffin (who spies on lonely women and then kills them) for some time now, but to no avail.
So the distressed FBI agent gives up hope of ever solving the crimes and moves from LA to Chicago in order to secure his own safety and peace of mind.
But, amused and motivated by Campbell's compassion toward his female victims, the killer follows him there and begins harassing him all over again, sending him pictures of new victims.
A final showdown is imminent when Griffin heightens the stakes of his game of cat and mouse by sending a picture of Campbell's psychiatrist (Tomei).
The two men are left to test each other to the limit in this realistic and entertaining thriller.
