New Zealand director Roger Donaldson, who has since moved on to direct Smash Palace and The Bounty, was already showing sharp directorial flair when he made this futuristic look at his native land as a police state. Sam Neill, as the eponymous Smith, acquits himself well in one of his leading roles.
